One of my clients asked me “Have you tried to fit in a crowd so much that you feel you have lost your identity?” I said, “Tell me more”. My client shared that she had joined a new workplace and tried to fit in for a long time, and somehow she was getting exhausted trying to fit in. When I asked her “Why was it important to fit in?” She said that she wanted to fit in so that she feels acknowledged. She shared that she had changed her dressing style, her eating habits to fit in. I then asked her, “What if you cannot fit in despite all the changes you make?” After the session, I started thinking about the need to fit in. Every day, every hour, young children, teens and adults, men and women all over the World try to fit in so that they are acknowledged and accepted. I wondered about the cost and toll it takes on the person who was trying to fit in. Does it affect their confidence? Does it have an impact on their self-esteem? What would they have to give up to change? What if one had the freedom to feel that they do not have to fit? They could be unique, even different! Image courtesy: Leen from Unsplash
