Shifting the belief from “I can’t learn” to “I can learn”! When children struggle to learn in school, many times they don’t just associate it with learning but who they are as a person. This belief can put a dent in their self-esteem and confidence. Then, they try even harder to study. They know that they are supposed to learn but feel helpless because they do not know how to learn. One powerful way of helping them shift to a more useful belief of “I can learn” is by giving enough counterexamples of the old belief. I was working with a child who told me “I am not good at studies”. I asked him how he knew that? He said, “Because my teacher told me”. I asked him if he believed that. He said, “Everyone says, so I believe that.” I then asked him “If you know how to study, will you be able to get good at studies?”. He said, “Yes.” I worked with him on his confidence and helped him reframe his limiting beliefs, and it helped his confidence. He now believes “I can get good at studies”, and he feels that it is only a matter of time when his belief shifts to “I am good at studies.”
